Emotion Creature
This project is inspired by the book Anh's Anger by Gail Silver & Illustrated by Christianne Kromer. In the book, Anh is visited by a fantasy creature, Anger. By sitting with this creature, not avoiding it, judging it, or obsessing over it, the creature slowly gets smaller and disappears. This project invites children to consider any emotion they've felt and envision it as a fantasy creature. There are many opportunities for students to share when they felt these emotions, how they felt, and what the emotions might look like.

Part 1: Envisioning Guide
Suggested discussion stem: "My emotion is ____ and some of my ideas are ___" (This is an envisioning stem where multiple ideas are shared. If other students want to suggest ideas, have them use "I wonder..." as in "I wonder what it would feel like with a red background." or "I appreciate..." if one of the ideas feels effective. "I appreciate the size of the creature you're planning to use because..." |
Part 2: Experimentation & Revision
Suggested discussion stem: "I ____ because I ____" (This connects their choices with their goals such as "I chose to make my character smooth and blue because I wanted her to feel calm and controlled.") |
Part 3: Final (glue sticks now provided)
Suggested discussion stem after gallery walk: "I noticed/wondered/appreciated..." (These neutral words can be more effective when providing feedback instead of "I like..." which emphasizes approval and judgement.). See this poster for reasons to avoid "I like" statements. |
