Spirit of the Land
In this project, students will reflect on a special place in nature near their home, a park, forest, river, or other meaningful outdoor space. Drawing inspiration from the basket patterns of the Hoopa, Karuk, and Yurok tribes, as well as the landscape-inspired artwork of Indigenous artist Lyn Risling, students will explore how patterns and symbols can express a deep connection to place. Through drawing, painting, and mixed-media techniques, students will design a visual artwork that honors the spirit of their chosen landscape and the cultural traditions rooted in the land.
