ArtSEL Onboarding Fall '22 - Spring '24
Welcome to ArtSEL!
ArtSEL (arts integrated with social-emotional learning) is a federally funded five-year grant for 7 selected Humboldt County schools. ArtSEL was created on the basis that children learn and thrive when their social-emotional needs are met, and the arts are a natural way to meet these needs.
This web quest will expose you to the concepts, strategies, and tools that have been covered since the launch of the program in 2022. It is organized into four sections: Program, Social-Emotional Learning, Art Concepts, and Tools. The quest will provide 3 hours of PD time. Take notes as you investigate; you will be submitting a reflection at the end of the quest. Suggested time spent on each section is indicated in green.
We appreciate our classified staff taking part in this onboarding process as well. If your position is classified, you only need to complete the Program, CASEL, and Design For Belonging sections along with the reflection for 1 hour of PD time. Feel free to explore more!
Enjoy your journey!

Program
Social-Emotional Learning
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to making SEL an essential part of education. The CASEL Framework creates a foundation for applying evidence-based strategies in your community or school and acts as a touchstone for our ArtSEL lessons. 10-15 min.
✐ Explore the framework. What are three takeaways that will inform your practice?
|
Design for Belonging, Susie Wise
In Year 1 we explored the Design for Belonging framework developed by Susie Wise at the Stanford d. school. This framework supports belonging and reduces othering within communities. Explore these resources and think about what belonging looks like in your school community. 30 min. |
✐ Read pages 3-6 in the book or slides 3-4 in the slide deck. Then complete the Emotional Journeys Map in the Exercises Slide Deck or open your book to pages 16-17. Reflect on your experience with the tool and share.
|
Integrating the book, Ahn's Anger, the Emotional Creature Lesson focuses on emotional granularity and allows students to create a fantasy creature of an emotion.
|
Collaborative Art Lesson 30 min.
At the beginning of the year, students should learn how to work well as a group as well as learning the building blocks of visual art AKA the "Elements". These lessons, at different grade levels, teach students how to contribute ideas for the group as well as how to compromise. The groups use line, shape, color, texture, value and space to make a group artwork. ✐ Review your grade level lesson. What are potential benefits for your students? What challenges do you foresee? |
Art Concepts 30 min.
Acting Right is an approach that takes the foundational elements of acting such as concentration, cooperation, and collaboration and creates a structured process, which can become the basis for effective classroom management every day. This engaging, step-by-step approach empowers students to take ownership of and be responsible for their own behavior. |

Reading Art is a foundational skill developed by Focus 5, a national leader in the field of arts integration. Reading Art introduces the language of visual art so that teachers feel confident looking, thinking, and talking about art with their students. Learn about resources for building a library of images that can be used to efficiently build background knowledge, teach content, generate points of inquiry for research, and assess understandings in social studies, science, and reading.
Reading Art starts with introducing the 9 Things to Look For. Check out these music videos to learn about the 9 things. |
Tools 30 min.
Notice/Wonder is a straightforward strategy for making thinking visible. Notice/Wonder provides students with moves to practice observation and inquiry when encountering new or unfamiliar content. Notice/Wonder/Appreciate adds another level to this strategy that brings assessment and gratitude into play as well. |
Making Thinking Visible The books "Making Thinking Visible" and "The Power of Making Thinking Visible" ask us to envision education as learning how to think. Fundamentally, this has two requirements. First, we need to be aware of the ways in which we think. As seen in the graphic, there are many different thinking paths such as observing, questioning, connecting, etc. There are more than nine ways, but those are a good starting point. Next, we need to ensure students are doing the thinking. How often does the teacher point out important concepts, ask questions, indicate connections, tell students the plan to follow, and evaluate the student's effort? Whoever does the thinking gets better at that way of thinking. This work involves shifting these thinking processes to the students. Use the sentence stems in the graphic as a way to help students take charge of the thinking process. |
Creativity Skills
Creativity isn't something we're born with; it's a skill we can learn and strengthen over our lifetime. Creative people have certain habits and skills that they use frequently. Some of these habits and skills are illustrated in the graphic. ✐Use the Creativity Skills wheel to reflect on a recent project you have done. Which skills have you developed with your students? Which would you work on more? |
